After the fight, Lux and Shim went to check the water. The stream running into the cavern was clean, with no sulfur smell, but at the bottom of a pool sat an object — an egg, cracked open, barely smaller than the corpse they had just dragged away.
The party concluded the angler was not a natural predator of the spiders at all: the egg floated down the stream from somewhere else and lodged here, and the thing that hatched from it was still a baby. Something larger laid it, and the water connects this cave to wherever that is.
Lux found the conclusion comforting in one sense — this was not a nest — and unsettling in another, since there are bigger fish out there.
